Des experts en liberté d'expression mettent en question la crédibilité d'un 
sommet mondial des Nations Unies sur la société de l'information en Tunisie

Des experts en liberté d'expression mettent en question la crédibilité d'un 
sommet mondial des Nations Unies sur la société de l'information en Tunisie

Genève - "La Tunisie n'est pas un endroit approprié pour organiser un 
sommet mondial des Nations Unies" d'après le dernier rapport du Groupe 
d'observation de la Tunisie (TMG) rendu public deux mois avant la tenue du 
Sommet Mondial sur la Société de l'Information (SMSI) à Tunis les 16, 17 et 
18 novembre 2005.

Le TMG diffuse aujourd'hui son deuxième rapport sur la Tunisie suite à la 
dernière mission d'enquête en Tunisie menée par des experts en liberté 
d'expression. Ce rapport s'intitule : "Liberté d'expression en Tunisie : le 
siège s'intensifie".

Le rapport de 21 pages est une mise à jour du premier rapport du TMG publié 
en février 2005 en préparation pour le Sommet mondial sur la Société de 
l'Information : "Tunisie : liberté d'expression assiégée".

Le rapport met en lumière une détérioration grave des conditions dans 
lesquelles s'exerce la liberté d'expression en Tunisie, particulièrement en 
ce qui concerne les organisations indépendantes, le harcèlement des 
journalistes et des dissidents, l'indépendance de la justice et avec 
l'emprisonnement de l'avocat des droits de l'Homme Mohamed Abbou.

Steve Buckley, Président du TMG a déclaré : "L'emprisonnement de Mohamed 
Abbou pour avoir émis son opinion dans des articles publiés sur Internet a 
eu un effet glacial sur la liberté d'expression et sur l'indépendance de la 
justice en Tunisie. Cet emprisonnement semble être directement lié aux 
efforts du gouvernement tunisien visant à réprimer la dissidence dans les 
mois qui précèdent le SMSI".

Au total, le rapport arrive à la conclusion que cet épisode, ainsi que 
d'autres développements du même ordre, montrent que le gouvernement 
tunisien cherche à réprimer plus avant la dissidence à la veille du SMSI.

Freedom of expression experts question credibility of UN World Summit on 
the Information Society in Tunisia

Freedom of expression experts question credibility of UN World Summit on 
the Information Society in Tunisia

Geneva - "Tunisia is not a suitable place to hold a United Nations World 
Summit" according to the latest report of the Tunisia Monitoring Group 
(TMG) released two months before the World Summit on the Information 
Society (WSIS), scheduled to take place in Tunis, 16-18 November 2005.

The TMG released today its second report on Tunisia entitled: "Freedom of 
Expression in Tunisia: The Siege Intensifies" following the latest of a 
series of fact-finding missions by freedom of expression experts.

The 18-page report is an update of the TMG's first report "Tunisia: Freedom 
of Expression Under Siege" published in February of this year in 
preparation for the World Summit.

The report highlights serious deterioration in conditions related to 
freedom of expression in Tunisia, particularly with respect to attacks on 
independent organisations, harassment of journalists and dissidents, and 
the independence of the judiciary. It also calls attention to the 
imprisonment of the human rights lawyer, Mohamed Abbou.

Steve Buckley, Chair of the TMG, said, "The imprisonment of Mohamed Abbou 
for voicing his opinion in articles on the Internet has had a chilling 
effect on freedom of expression and the independence of the judiciary and 
appears to be directly linked to Tunisian government efforts to suppress 
dissent in the run up to the WSIS."

Cumulatively the report concludes that this and many other new developments 
show that the Tunisian government is seeking to stifle dissent on the eve 
of the WSIS.
