L'OBJECTIF DE L'ATELIER EST DE DONNER AUX PARTICIPANTS... 

* Des compétences pratiques pour planifier, concevoir, installer et 
maintenir un réseau informatique sans-fil   

* Des éléments de choix entre les différentes technologies réseau et 
leurs coûts dans un projet communautaire   

* Un cadre d'échange pérenne pour les projets communautaires (liste 
de diffusion, forum de discussion)   

CONTEXTE

Les technologies sans fil offrent aux pays en voie de développement 
une alternative bon marché et très souple comparé aux infrastructures 
câblées. Elles permettent aux communautés locales d'étendre la zone 
de connectivité à Internet en maîtrisant tous les éléments du réseau, 
depuis la planification jusqu'à la maintenance. Elles transforment le 
réseau en un outil technologique qui sert vraiment les besoins des 
communauté locales. Les standards libres et ouverts des technologies 
sans fil apportent non seulement de meilleures performances au 
moindre coût, mais apportent également un modèle décentralisé 
d'Internet à un secteur qui a jusqu'à maintenant été limité aux 
services des opérateurs traditionnels de télécommunication.   

APC (Association for Progressive Communications) coordonne un projet 
supporté par le CRDI (Centre de Recherches pour le Développement 
International) et OSI (Open Society Institute) en vue de former des 
experts sur le thème des technologies sans fil au service des 
communautés locales en Afrique.   

CONTENU DE L'ATELIER

Le programme détaillé de l'atelier sera ajusté en fonction des 
besoins exprimés par les participants. Les thèmes suivants sont en 
général explorés :  

* Définition et avantages des technologies sans fil 
* Topologie des réseaux sans fil 
* Configuration des postes clients (Windows et Linux)
* Configuration des points d'accès sans fil
* La théorie des signaux radio et des antennes 
* L'étude de site
* Le bilan d'une liaison radio 
* La supervision et maintenance des réseaux sans fil 
* La sécurité des réseaux wifi 
* Les standards et la réglementation

LOGISTIQUE

* Dates de l'atelier : 12 - 16 juillet 2006  

* Lieu de l'atelier : Université Al Akhawayn, Ifrane, Maroc  

Langue de travail : Arabe. Certaines sessions auront lieu en français 
ou en anglais.  

* Frais de participation : Les frais de transport, de logement 
(chambres doubles partagées), les repas et la participation à 
l'atelier seront entièrement pris en charge par les organisateurs. 
Les participants devront s'acquitter par eux-mêmes des frais de visa 
et d'assurance-voyage en cas de besoin, et des dépenses personnelles. 
Aucun perdiem ne sera accordé  

* Préparation / contributions : Les participants sélectionnés devront 
préparer une courte présentation de leurs projets   

CRITERES D'ELIGIBILITE ET DE SELECTION 

Le nombre de participants est limité et la demande est grande. 

L'évaluation des candidatures prendra en compte les connaissances 
techniques, les projets communautaires présentés, et la motivation. 
Les femmes sont particulièrement encouragées à participer.   

Compétences prérequises : 

* Expérience dans la gestion des réseaux TCP/IP 

* Des connaissances de base en mathématique 

* Maîtrise de l'arabe et du français OU de l'anglais 

Prérequis organisationnels / communautaires : 

* Faire partie d'une ONG ou association communautaire ou démontrer un 
lien avec un projet de développement communautaire.   

Motivation : 

* Nous attendons des participants sélectionnés qu'ils utilisent les 
connaissances apprises pendant l'atelier pour améliorer un projet 
communautaire ou assurent la formation d'acteurs au niveau local.

THE WORKSHOP AIMS TO 

* Develop technical skills in wireless network planning, design, and 
management  

* Promote understanding of appropriate wireless technology choices 
for community networking  

* Lay the foundation for a community of like-minded practitioners to 
share knowledge, skills and experiences  

BACKGROUND 

Wireless technologies offer developing countries an important low- 
cost, versatile alternative to wired infrastructure. They enable 
communities to extend the reach of cabled internet connectivity and 
to be in control of the planning, implementation and design of their 
own networks, making the network into a tool that really serves the 
needs of the community. Open wireless standards not only bring new 
technical opportunities at very low cost, but also bring a 
decentralized internet model to an area which has been restricted to 
traditional telecommunication operators.  

The Association for Progressive Communications is coordinating an 
initiative, supported by the International Development Research 
Centre (IDRC) and the Open Society Institute (OSI), to build capacity 
to implement wireless technologies for community networking in 
Africa.   

WORKSHOP CONTENT

The final workshop agenda will be fine-tuned in line with 
participants' needs and experience, but is expected to cover  

* Introduction to wireless technologies
* Basic wireless network topology
* Windows/Linux client setup
* Access point setup
* Antennas 
* Basic radio physics
* Site survey
* Link calculation
* Network security
* Managing/monitoring the network

LOGISTICAL INFORMATION

* Workshop dates: 12-16 July 2006

* Venue: Al Akhawayn University, Ifrane, Morocco

* Workshop language: the main language of the workshop is Arabic. 
Selected sessions will be held in French and/or English.

* Costs: the cost of travel, shared accommodation, meals and workshop 
attendance will be covered by the organizers. Participants are 
expected to cover their own visa, travel insurance, health- related 
costs and single accommodation supplements. No per diem will be 
given.  

* Pre-workshop preparation: Participants will be required to 
undertake a small amount of pre-workshop preparation  

ELIGIBILITY AND SELECTION CRITERIA

Workshop space is limited and demand for places is high. Evaluation 
of applications will take into account technical skills, community 
linkages and motivation for participation. Applications from women 
are particularly encouraged.  

Prerequisite skills

* At least basic hands-on experience in TCP/IP network administration
* General arithmetic skills
* Arabic and French OR English language skills

Organizational/community prerequisites

* Located in a community organization/NGO or demonstrable ties with a 
community-focussed networking project.  

Motivation

* Strong indication of intention to apply the skills and knowledge 
acquired at the workshop for community development.
