La Fundación Escuela Latinoamericana de Redes - ESLARED y el 
Instituto para la Conectividad en las Américas - ICA 
anuncian el lanzamiento del Portal WiLAC. El lanzamiento se 
realizará durante el “Panel de experiencias en 
implementación de tecnologías inalámbricas” que se
desarrollará el 27 de Julio de 2005 en el marco de los 
talleres WALC 2005 <www.walc2005.ula.ve/index.html> en 
Mérida (Venezuela).

WiLAC es un nuevo portal informativo sobre las Tecnologías 
Inalámbricas ( Wireless) para el Desarrollo <www.wilac.net>, 
pensado para apoyar a aquellas personas, organizaciones, 
municipalidades y empresas que se encuentran implementando 
proyectos comunitarios de conectividad inalámbrica o que 
desean hacerlo.

El portal WiLAC promueve a través de Latino América y el 
Caribe la información referente al diseño, implementación, 
desarrollo, replicabilidad y uso de los componentes 
necesarios para que un proyecto de conectividad inalámbrica 
sea exitoso y se mantenga al servicio de la comunidad.

Más específicamente, la información, totalmente en español, 
está estructurada para ofrecer al usuario información 
pertinente sobre: investigación (estudios de caso, análisis 
de impacto); implementación (artículos y reportes sobre 
proyectos en desarrollo); reseñas técnicas y novedades sobre 
los estándares en desarrollo; legislación (enlaces y 
descripción de las condiciones que se ofrecen en cada país 
para el desarrollo de redes inalámbricas); recursos de 
capacitación (materiales, cursos y talleres); experiencia 
regional; fondos de apoyo disponibles; noticias de wireless 
en el mundo; y eventos.

WiLAC promueve la cooperación directa y el intercambio entre 
las iniciativas basadas en tecnologías inalámbricas que se 
están desarrollando en la región (y en otras regiones). 
También promueve la relación y el acompañamiento de 
iniciativas con cierta experiencia y a aquellas que apenas 
están iniciando. El portal ha sido desarrollado enteramente 
utilizando software de fuente abierta.

El Instituto para la Conectividad en las Américas (ICA) 
surgió a partir de la Cumbre de las Américas del año 2001. 
Es el foro para la innovación hemisférica en la aplicación 
de tecnologías de la información y la comunicación (TICs) 
para el desarrollo económico y social. La meta del
ICA es promover el uso de las TIC en los países de América 
Latina y el Caribe para fortalecer la democracia, generar 
prosperidad económica y hacer realidad el potencial humano 
de la región. El ICA está actualmente en proceso de 
gestación en el Centro Internacional de Investigaciones
para el Desarrollo (IDRC) en la Sede Central en Ottawa, 
Canadá y en la Oficina Regional en Montevideo, Uruguay.

The Latin-American School of Networks Foundation – (ESLARED) 
and the Institute for Connectivity in the Americas - (ICA) 
announce the launching of the WiLAC portal. The launch will 
take place during the “Experiences from Wireless Project 
Implementation” event, which will be held on July 27 th , 
2005, in Mérida (Venezuela), as part of the activities 
developed during WALC 2005 <www.walc2005.ula.ve/index.html>.

WiLAC is a new information portal about Wireless 
technologies for Development <www.wilac.net>, designed to 
support those individuals, organizations, municipalities and 
businesses which are currently implementing community 
wireless connectivity projects, or those just about to start.

Throughout Latin American and the Caribbean the WiLAC portal 
promotes information about design, implementation, 
development, replication, and use of the necessary 
components for a successful community wireless project that 
serves the community.

More specifically, the information, available in Spanish, 
has been structured to offer the user relevant information 
regarding: research (cases studies, impact analysis); 
implementation (articles and reports about current 
projects); technical reviews and news about technical
standards development; regulatory framework (links and 
descriptions of the conditions in each country to develop 
community wireless networks); training resources (materials, 
courses and workshops); regional expertise; support funds 
available; news about wireless projects in other parts of 
the world; and related events.

WiLAC promotes direct cooperation and exchange among 
community initiatives using wireless technologies under 
development in the region (and also in other regions). It 
also promotes building up relationships and support from 
those initiatives with more experience to those initiatives 
just starting up. The portal was fully developed using Open
Source Software.
