Ghana.
Hon. Baffour Awuah, Deputy Minister of Brong Ahafo has
advised students to make the Internet their companion
and constantly visit it as a resource to transform
their societies. According to him, government is
tackling the issue of access as it relates to the
development of infrastructure, upgrading of
communication networks, local content and skill
acquisition to enable the country to achieve
benchmarks set out in the global action plan included
in Geneva 2003.
Hon. Awuah, gave the advice when he addressed
students, teachers and heads of Institutions from
Senior Secondary schools in the Sunyani Municipal Area
during the Regional ICT Sensitization Outreach and
Youth Trainers Camp tagged Rural Youth National
Information Campaigns (RYNICs) in commemoration of
African Union Day. The theme was Youth Bridging the
urban-rural digital divide
The Outreach that is part of Ghanas youth as well as
World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Youth
Caucus activities toward Tunis 2005 to be held in
November aims at bringing together young people from
every corner of the country to get developed,
empowered and informed to deliberate on issues that
could build a sustainable information society.
The programme was organized by National Youth
Information Society Campaign (NYISC) and Prime
Resources in conjunction with Technical Center for
Agricultural and Rural Cooperation ACP-EU (CTA),
Science Education Unit (Ghana Education Service) and
Ministry of Communications. About two hundred (200)
students, teachers and heads of Institutions from
seven Senior Secondary School in the Sunyani Municipal
attended the programme.
Mr Leopold L.L. Armah, Coordinator of the Outreach on
his part said the best way young people on the
continent can celebrate their heritage on Africa Union
Day is to equip themselves on how to utilize ICTS for
the benefit of their society because with ICT, the
possibilities are limitless.
He indicated that NYISC has a lot programs in ICT and
youth development and expressed the hope that the
government, private sector and the larger community
would continue to support such initiatives and other
programs that are aimed at helping the youth to
acquire modern skills for accelerated development.
Participants were trained on how to use the computer
as well as the Internet. At the end of the Outreach,
most of the students expressed their appreciation to
the organizers for exposing them to the use of the
computer for the first time and called for more of
similar initiatives.
