WSIS [TUNISIA & CR]

Council for Tunisian Freedom) believes that holding
the second phase of the World Summit on the

WHAT DO COMMUNICATION RIGHTS MEAN TO PEOPLE ON THE
GROUND WHEN THEY ARE DENIED THEM?
In an age of increasing concentration of the media in
fewer hands, governments working hand in hand with
private companies to get their messages onto the front
page, state paranoia and growing surveillance, groups
and individuals are coming together to build a new
communications agenda focused on equality, dignity,
diversity and justice.

WHO RULES THE INTERNET?
Internet governance is becoming an influential factor
in the way we access, consume, produce and exchange
information. It is just one of the critical issues to
be debated in November at the World Summit on the
Information Society (WSIS). As the internet governance
working group prepares to meet later this month, Panos
London launches the first brief of its WSIS media
toolkit.

ICT FOR CAPACITY-BUILDING: CRITICAL SUCCESS FACTORS
The first phase of the WSIS resulted in a "call to
action" by world leaders to use information and
communication technologies (ICT) in the service of
development. This was a response to the "digital
divide", which can be characterized as the "knowledge
divide", between those who have access to the capacity
building tools of the 21st century and those who do
not.

OFFSETTING IPRS' ADVERSE EFFECTS ON ACCESS TO
KNOWLEDGE
[By Martin Khor] The public's access to knowledge is
increasingly hindered by imbalanced intellectual
property regimes which are tilted to the advantage of
IP holders vis-à-vis users and consumers, and there is
a need to establish a treaty or at least principles to
redress this imbalance as part of a "development
agenda" in fora dealing with intellectual property
protection.
