World Development Information Day

21 October 2004

The United Nations General Assembly instituted World
Development Information Day in December 1972 with the
objective of drawing public attention annually to development
problems and the importance of strengthening international
cooperation to solve them.

The Assembly also decided that World Development
Information Day should coincide, in principle, with United
Nations Day on 24 October, to stress the central role of
development in the work of the United Nations.

To celebrate World Development Information Day this year,
SANGONeT is hosting a special one-day event on Thursday,
21 October 2004, at its Braamfontein office.

The objective of the event is to highlight the role and
significance of information and communication in the South African
NGO sector and to profile the work of the sector and specific
initiatives aimed at improving its information and communication
capacity. 

The event will comprise of the following:

- An exhibition of NGO activities;
- Presentations by representatives from government, civil
society and the United Nations on the significance of World
Development Information Day;
- Workshop on "Non-Profit Marketing - Mainstreaming
Development Communication";
- Official launch of the Thusanang 'Online Donor Database';
- Official launch of NGO.ZA - a new SANGONeT initiative
aimed a providing the South African NGO sector with a wide range
of affordable ICT solutions.

The event will stimulate interest in the work of the NGO
sector and create awareness of the importance of information-
sharing and communication in the South African development
context.

The event will be held at SANGONeT's Braamfontein office
(Ground Floor, 76 Juta Street in Braamfontein). A map of the venue
is available on request. The event will start at 09h00 and conclude
by 17h00.

There is no charge for attending the event, but as space is
limited, please register by 18 October 2004.

If you are interested in exhibiting at the event, the cost for an
exhibition stand is R500. The fee covers an exhibition stand, wall
space and a dedicated computer terminal with Internet connectivity
to profile your organisation's website.
