WSIS and The Human Development Agenda
UNDP's Asia-Pacific Development Information Programme (APDIP), in close
collaboration with its partners, will highlight some of the key issues
relating to developing nations and their specific human development needs,
and ensuring that their views are addressed and considered at the World
Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) in Geneva.

It is increasingly important for global leaders and representatives from
civil society, governments and private sector debate, deliberate and
fervently seek to shape the future of the information society of tomorrow.
To do so, we must examine critical questions on how Information and
Communication Technologies (ICTs) are actually able to address global,
regional and national human development issues.  In addressing these
questions, UNDP APDIP is undertaking two major initiatives, which will
showcased at WSIS:

Pioneering Regional Human Development Report
An exclusive PREVIEW EVENT of the forthcoming “Regional Human Development
Report on Promoting ICT for Human Development in Asia: Realising the
Millennium Development Goals” will be held at WSIS in Geneva on 11 December
2003 at the ICT4Development Platform by UNDP’s Asia-Pacific Development
Information Programme (UNDP-APDIP) and the Human Development Resource Centre
(HDRC). This Regional HDR is a systematic study across nine countries in
Asia exploring the potential uses of ICT in human development, using the
United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) as a benchmark.

Cyber Summit Debate - Broadcast Live Worldwide and On Web
A distinguished panel, including representatives from government, the
communications industry, civil society, and the UN will debate issues
emerging from WSIS on 11 December 2003. The debate will go live on the
Internet and viewers worldwide will be encouraged to send in questions to
the TV moderator. This debate will be broadcast to 275 million homes and a
million hotels in 200 countries and territories. It seeks to enlighten
policy-makers and the public internationally about the realities and
complexities of ICTs in a global context, so as to realise the potential of
environmentally sound development and the efforts to improve lives and raise
the status of poor and disadvantaged groups.
